How well can you think like an AI?

Why we are doing this research: We are trying to understand how to design Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can help people in decision-making.

What you will have to do: You will be presented with a series of pictures of plates of food. We provide you with the known fat content of each plate of food, but the AI does not know the fat content. The AI will try to evaluate the fat content and will present its reasoning to you. Based on its explanation, you will predict what the AI's decision will be for each plate of food. There are two AIs in this activity: you will predict the decisions of one AI in the first half, and the decisions of a different AI in the second half. Both AIs have 75% accuracy. You will also fill out a questionnaire at the beginning of the experiment.

What you will get out of it? We will give you feedback on how you well you predicted the decisions of the AI. The studies on this website are not for clinical diagnosis.

Potential risks: There are no risks anticipated in taking part in this study and you are free to leave at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

Privacy: Your responses will be kept anonymous. We do not collect any information that could be used to directly establish your identity.

Duration: Approximately 7 minutes.

Overall, you got questions correct.

You predicted the first AI’s decision correctly of the time. Whereas, you predicted the second AI’s decision correctly of the time.

The first AI made its decisions based on plates that resembled the plate in question. The second AI made its decisions based on the ingredients on the plate of food.

The first AI made its decisions based on the ingredients on the plate of food. The second AI made its decisions based on plates that were similar to the plate in question.

In this activity, you performed better by finding similarities among all the plates of food and deciding if the AI matched correct examples to the plate in question. Making broad generalizations from specific observations corresponds to inductive reasoning.

In this activity, you performed better by recognizing whether the AI correctly identified the ingredients. Identifying whether a specific observation fits to a certain rule corresponds to deductive reasoning.

In this activity, you performed equally well with both AIs.
